Originally intended as an interceptor, the F-4 actually developed into a fighter/bomber/interceptor with the addition of an M61 Vulcan 20mm Gatling cannon along with the bomb and missile capabilities. Starting with the Vietnam War, this flexibility led to usage by the USAF, USN and USMC, and the F-4 engaged in everything from air-to-air combat, to ground strikes and even reconaissance in the "Wild Weasel" version (which had it's final combat usage in the 1992 Desert Storm operation).
